Legal Defense for Boeung Kak Representatives

2012-06-27 - CLEC

Regarding the arrest of the Mr. Sao Sareoun and Mrs. Ly Chanary, CLEC commenced legal defense on May 30 2012 after the two representatives were arrested and charged with insulting police and obstructing public officials during a protest that turned violent outside the courthouse.

Amid CLEC legal defense and calls to drop all charges and free all Boeung Kak detainees, the Municipal Court quietly freed both representatives on June 15, 2012.

On June 19, 2012, CLEC appealed the warrant of the Investigating Judge dated June 15, 2012, which keeps Mr. Sao Saroeun and Mrs. Channary under judicial control. CLEC is still awaiting a response to the appeal.

The following week, around 400 hundred people gathered at the Appeal Court for the release of the remaining 13 imprisoned representatives. The Appeal Court suspended the remaining sentence of all 13 who were released from Prey Sar Prison on the evening of June 27, 2012.
